Numbers spelled out correctly
Put one number per line in any common form (42, 1,234.56, 1000000, -7.5) and pick a format:
| Format | 1,234.56 becomes |
|---|---|
| Words | one thousand two hundred thirty-four point five six |
| Cheque | One thousand two hundred thirty-four and 56/100 dollars |
| Currency | one thousand two hundred thirty-four dollars and fifty-six cents |
| Ordinal (whole numbers) | 21 → twenty-first |
| Year | 1999 → nineteen ninety-nine; 2005 → two thousand five; 2010 → twenty ten |
| Digit by digit | one two three four point five six |
Hyphens are used for compound numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine, as standard English style requires. British “and” gives “one hundred and five” and “one thousand and five”. Change the currency word to pounds, euros or anything else; set the minor unit to pence or centimes.
Very large numbers use the short scale (million, billion, trillion…) up to vigintillion, 66 digits.
Writing cheques
On a cheque, write the amount in words starting at the far left, with the cents as a fraction over 100, and draw a line through the remaining space so nothing can be added. The cheque format here follows that convention.
