Word & Character Counters

Count words, characters, sentences and syllables, and work out reading time and page count.

Counting done carefully

Counting sounds trivial until you meet hyphenated words, em dashes, emoji, Chinese text and abbreviations that end in full stops. Every counter here uses the same Unicode-aware engine: words are whitespace-separated tokens containing a letter or digit (the word-processor convention), languages written without spaces are segmented with the browser’s dictionary, characters are counted as the grapheme clusters people actually see, and sentence detection understands “Dr.”, “e.g.” and decimals. Read how word counters count for the details.

Questions

Which word counter is the most accurate?

Counts differ because tools make different choices about hyphens, dashes, numbers and languages without spaces. The Word Counter follows the word-processor convention (space-separated tokens with a letter or digit) and uses Unicode dictionary segmentation for Chinese, Japanese and Thai. The guide How Word Counters Count, and Why They Disagree explains the differences.

How do I count words in a PDF or Word file?

Use the Document Word Counter. It reads DOCX, PDF, ODT, TXT, Markdown and HTML files in your browser and totals several files at once.

How long will my text take to read or present?

The Reading Time Calculator uses research-based reading speeds (238 wpm for non-fiction); the Speaking Time Calculator estimates speeches and scripts at the pace you choose.
