Structured data in JSON-LD
Structured data describes your content in a vocabulary search engines understand (schema.org). Google recommends the JSON-LD format: a <script type="application/ld+json"> block you can place anywhere in the page.
This generator builds four common types:
- FAQPage, write questions and answers as plain text, starting lines with “Q:” and “A:” (or put each question on a line ending in “?” followed by its answer).
- Article / BlogPosting / NewsArticle: headline, description, image, author, publisher and dates.
- BreadcrumbList: one crumb per line as “Name | URL”.
- Organization: name, website, logo and social profiles (
sameAs).
Empty fields are left out rather than output as blank strings, and characters that could break out of the script tag are escaped.
Set expectations
Valid markup makes content eligible for rich results; it doesn’t guarantee them. Since 2023 Google shows FAQ rich results only for a small set of authoritative government and health sites, though the markup is still valid and used by other systems. Breadcrumb and article markup continue to be widely used. Test your page with Google’s Rich Results Test before publishing, and only mark up content that is visible on the page.
Worked example
Here is what the Schema Markup Generator returns for its built-in example. Settings used: Schema type: FAQ page; Article type: Article. Click Try an example in the tool above to load it, then change it as you like.
Schema type: faq
Questions and answers (“Q: …” then “A: …”): Q: Is the word counter free?
A: Yes. All tools are free and need no account.
Q: Is my text uploaded?
A: No. Everything runs in your browser.<script type="application/ld+json">
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "FAQPage",
"mainEntity": [
{
"@type": "Question",
"name": "Is the word counter free?",
"acceptedAnswer": {
"@type": "Answer",
"text": "Yes. All tools are free and need no account."
}
},
{
"@type": "Question",
"name": "Is my text uploaded?",
"acceptedAnswer": {
"@type": "Answer",
"text": "No. Everything runs in your browser."
}
}
]
}
</script>Questions
Does FAQ schema still work?
The markup is valid, but since 2023 Google shows FAQ rich results only for well-known government and health websites. Other search features and tools can still read it.
Where do I put JSON-LD?
Anywhere in the page’s HTML, usually in the head. It does not affect what visitors see.
