Every kind of emoji
Modern emoji are surprisingly complex. A single visible emoji can be several code points joined together: a skin-tone modifier (👩🏽), a zero-width joiner sequence (👨👩👧 is three people and two joiners), a regional-indicator pair (🇯🇵), or a keycap sequence (1️⃣). Removing them character by character leaves broken fragments and invisible joiners behind.
This tool works on whole grapheme clusters (what you see as one symbol) so each emoji is removed completely, along with its modifiers and joiners.
Keeping text symbols
Some characters that Unicode classes as emoji have long lived in ordinary text: ©, ®, ™, arrows (→), and symbols such as ★ and ☑. With Keep text symbols on, these are kept unless they’re displayed in colourful emoji style. Tidy leftover spaces collapses the double spaces left where emoji were removed.
Why remove emoji
Emoji can break older databases and systems limited to the Basic Multilingual Plane, inflate character counts on platforms that weight them, and clutter text being analysed or read aloud by screen readers, which announce each emoji by name.
Worked example
Here is what the Remove Emojis returns for its built-in example. Settings used: Keep text symbols (© ™ → ★): on; Tidy leftover spaces: on. Click Try an example in the tool above to load it, then change it as you like.
